Retired Chief Inspector George Sharp and historian David Umber become convinced that a serial pedophile falsely confessed to a child's murder and another's kidnapping in 1981 near the stone monoliths at Avebury. Umber was a witness to the original crime, and eventually married the nanny of the children. The investigation leads to even more mysteries, as Umber realizes that his wife's supposed suicide may have been murder.
